Zazpi Jauziak, translated as “the dance of the 7 jumps”, is a herri dantza of Baztan, a mutil dantza and also a jauziak in some places of Euskal Herria.

It is widespread not only in our Basque territory, but also in the world as a round dance. But, behind this dance, this jauzia, the zazpi jauziak has a legend that our grandfathers and grandmothers have told us. Hartzkume, Juan the little bear, at the age of 7 years was imprisoned in the great cave, together with his mother. He had been imprisoned for 7 years and at that age he obtained the strength of 14 men and with that, jumping 49 times, 1 after the other, he managed to get out of the prison to which he was subjected.

49, does not come out just like that, it comes out of adding 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 6 5 4 3 2 1. Counting from 1 to 7 and from 7 to 1.

But if we do only half, up to 7, it gives us the sum of 28, which curiously, is the lunar cycle.
